Winless struggle continues for JPL debutants Spanish Town Police
NEWCOMERS Spanish Town Police are yet to register a win in the Wray & Nephew Jamaica Premier League (JPL), with many already scripting their relegation demise come the end of the season.
Noting the current dire straits, assistant coach William Spencer says the team will need to break some bad habits if it is to see positive results going forward.
The St Catherine-based club suffered a seventh defeat of the season, going down 0-3 to defending champions Cavalier FC at Waterhouse Stadium in Drewsland on Sunday.
Spanish Town Police held their own in the first half but were undone just six minutes into the second half with Adrian Reid, in the 47th minute, and Christopher Ainsworth, in the 51st minute, putting Cavalier two goals up.
Reid grabbed his second and Cavalier’s third in the 78th minute to keep Spanish Town Police winless in nine games so far.
Spencer believes the team needs to perform well for the entire 90 minutes if they’re to stand a chance of survival in the league.
“The first half [was good] but the second half was very atrocious. We lapsed in the second half three or four times — and we paid the price for our lapsing,” he said.
“This is a trend that we have been doing in the last three or four games — playing good first halves and then just making a lot of silly mistakes in the second half.”
Players’ frustrations boiled over during periods of the game but Spencer says they need to put the losses behind them quickly.
“When you’re not winning, this is something that will happen but we just have to come again, fight again, train again, and come for the other game.”
While Spanish Town Police remain at the bottom of the table with two points, reigning back-to-back champions Cavalier jumped into the top five with 13 points and have now won three of their last four games.
Cavalier Assistant Coach David Lalor says the team is improving as the season goes on.
“We’re right on track for what we needed. We made some adjustments to the team in the second half and it just paid out,” he said. “These youngsters are now coming into their own so we’re happy that it’s happening now so that at the end of the road, we can be strong.”
Two of Sunday’s five scheduled games were postponed. Chapelton Maroons and Molynes United were to clash at 3:00 pm at Turners Oval but the match was called off due to inclement weather. Mount Pleasant FA’s game with Treasure Beach FC will also be played at a later date due to the former’s participation in the Concacaf Caribbean Cup this week.
