Cops shot during robbery attempt motivated to continue serving
AFTER being shot by gunmen during a June 24 robbery in Montego Bay, St James, two constables who received the medal of honour for gallantry on Monday, National Heroes Day, said they are now more inspired to continue serving and protecting fellow Jamaicans.
The constables were honoured during the 2025 National Honours and Awards ceremony at King’s House in St Andrew.
While the experience somewhat boosted their confidence, Constables Ramone Henry and Tyrone Stephenson said that they were, in fact, just very happy to be alive.
Henry said he was very “elated”, and despite being shot in both legs, the incident has in no way dampened his spirit.
“I feel very elated to be recognised for my contribution to my community. We took an oath to protect and serve, and we did just that. It was just another day on the job. We did not expect that to happen, but it comes with the job. We are grateful for life and grateful for the fact that we were recognised for our efforts,” he said.
“I am also grateful that in the event no one lost their life. We were able to uphold the mission statement of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. We were able to protect and serve. It did not dampen my spirit. If anything, I am even more encouraged to do my work.”
Stephenson, who was shot in the arm, said he was also happy that there were no civilian casualties.
“The incident happened on March 18, 2025 about 8:00 pm. We were there and heard explosions. We were alerted to a robbery and we responded. In the act of everything we were injured. We prevented injury to other people and damage to property. I am very grateful to be alive,” he said.
“I received a medal for gallantry and I am more brave now. I am more aware now of my surroundings. To see that I am being recognised by my country is an honourable feeling. I hope to go as far as I can go in the police force,” he said.
