Dinthill, McGrath score big wins in daCosta Cup round of 16
Dinthill Technical and McGrath High both scored important wins, beating Manning’s School and Manchester High as the round of 16 of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition got underway on Wednesday
Manning’s and Manchester wracked up impressive records throughout the first round and into the round of 32 before both were held to draws on Saturday, ending their perfect records.
They were failing to score for the first time all season.
Former champions Cornwall College, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STATHS) and Glenmuir High, as well as Ocho Rios High, and McGrath High also scored wins, while the game between defending champions Garvey Maceo High and Clarendon College ended in a 0-0 draw.
McGrath leads Zone 4 on goal-difference after their 2-0 win over Manchester at Ewarton Sports Complex, with Jimm Mitchell scoring both goals.
Dinthill are also on three points after their 2-1 win over Manning’s in Linstead.
STETHS were 4-0 winners over nine man Kemps Hill High in Santa Cruz, to top Zone 3 on goal-difference over Ocho Rios, who edged Old Harbour High 1-0 at Drax Hall.
Kaieem Lewis scored a brace to to lead STETHS while RJay Newman and Wayne Brown also got on the scoresheet.
Kemps Hill, who beat Frome Technical High in a rescheduled game on Monday to book their place, was reduced to 10 men just before halftime when goalkeeper Omario Chambers was sent off after getting two yellow cards a few minutes apart.
He was shown the first card after bringing down Lewis in the 18 yard box to concede a penalty and after picking up the ball out of the net, ran in the direction of the referee when he was shown a red card and will miss the remainder of the round.
Nickane Brown and Mekhi Foster both scored scored doubles as Cornwall beat Maldon High 6-1, the widest margin of victory on the day and the third time they were beating their fellow Zone A team of the season.
Cornwall won 1-0 and 4-1 in the first round and on Wednesday, Carlondo Morris opened the scoring while Shakeem Gibson scored the other goal. Javaughn Anglin scored for Maldon High.
Christiana High also won their Zone 1 game, blanking William Knibb Memorial 3-0.
