Vauxhall High rekindles football passion under Kyle Butler’s leadership
Twenty-seven-year-old Kyle Butler is being hailed as the driving force behind a cultural shift at Vauxhall High School, reigniting enthusiasm for football among both staff and students.
Vauxhall, who are in unfamiliar territory, advancing to the second round of the ISSA/WATA Manning Cup, opened their round-of-16 campaign on Wednesday afternoon at the Waterhouse Stadium. The team battled to a hard-fought draw against last season’s finalists, St Catherine High School.
Butler described the result as an important one for his team.
“St Catherine are a quality team,” he said. “Getting something from the game keeps our confidence intact and shows that we can compete with anyone once we stick to our structure and discipline.”
Since taking over the school’s Under-19 football programme in June, Butler has led the team to a remarkable turnaround, suffering only two defeats all season. This stands in stark contrast to last year’s campaign, when Vauxhall failed to progress beyond the first round.
The team’s resurgence has also reignited school pride, drawing renewed support from students, teachers, and the wider community.
“Vauxhall is a proud institution and to see the students, teachers and community rally behind the team is something special,” Butler shared.
“For me it’s not just about football, it’s about identity and belief. If I have played a small role in helping the boys and the school rediscover that spirit, then that is something I will always be proud of.”
Vauxhall will face St George’s College in their next outing, a must-win fixture if they are to keep their semifinal hopes alive.
“The approach will be more calculated, focusing on recovery and correcting the small details that can make the difference at this level,” Butler said.
St George’s will also be chasing a victory after losing their opening match 4–2 to Charlie Smith, who top Group 3.
