#EyeOnMelissa: Digicel urges customers to report acts of vandalism during Melissa
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Digicel Jamaica is urging members of the public to stay alert and report any suspicious activity or acts of vandalism that could impact network services during Tropical Storm Melissa.
“We’ve done everything possible to prepare our network for the storm,” said Stephen Murad, chief executive officer of Digicel Jamaica.
“But we also need the help of our customers and communities. If you see or hear anything suspicious that could affect our service or infrastructure, please report it immediately. Together, we can help keep Jamaica connected, informed and safe,” he added.
In a press release on Friday, Digicel committed to keeping customers connected for as long as it is safe to do so, adding that its technical and response teams remain on high alert, with all major cell sites, fibre routes and data centres secured and supported by backup power systems and emergency resources.
The company maintained that field engineers are on standby to respond quickly to weather-related issues and ensure service restoration if needed.
Murad reminded customers that deliberate acts of vandalism can significantly disrupt mobile, home internet and TV services, especially during critical times such as national emergencies.
He noted that in recent months, fibre optic cables were intentionally cut in some areas, causing widespread outages and interrupting service for thousands of customers at a time when reliable connectivity mattered most.
“Customers are encouraged to report vandalism or damage to Digicel infrastructure by contacting customer care at 100, through MyDigicel app chat support, or by reaching out to local law enforcement authorities,” said Murad.
In addition, Digicel continues to advise customers to keep phones and mobile devices fully charged; have adequate credit, data, or plans topped up in advance; and follow official updates from the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) and the Meteorological Service of Jamaica.
“Our teams will remain on duty throughout the storm. We are all in this together, and we are counting on the vigilance of our customers to help us help them stay connected,” added Murad.
