Shreyas Smith tops Harold Chan Chess Open
FM Shreyas Smith won the Harold Chan Chess Open contested October 18-19, 2025. Smith won on 5/6 points with his only defeat coming in round three from Nathan Belinfante (3.5 points).
CM Akeem Brown also finished on 5 points but was second overall on tie break, while CM Jhustice-Dimonte McDonald, who was third, Angelus-Seren McDonald (fourth) and Ronak Shergil, rounding out the top five Open places. The latter three all ended on 4.5 points, with tie break again determining the placements. WCM Nickaylah Curwin ended the top female in the Open section.
In the U1800 Section, Kamari Stephens (5.5 points) won from David Lam (5), Xavier Grossett (4.5), fourth-placed Nathaniel Green (4) and fifth-placed Vaishnav Gali (4 points). Noelle Noble, in 10th place with 3.5 points, was the top female in this section.
In the U1500 Absolute Section, Garcio Gayle won on a perfect score (5/5 points) from Pranav Sunkara, who was second, and third-placed Rhea Gardener, who were both on (4.5). Aundrae Chang Jnr and Ariana-Marie Daniels, both on 4 points, were fourth and fifth, respectively.
In the U1500 Female Section, Chandana Jampany won on perfect score (5/5 points) from second-placed Breya Johnson (4), third-placed Kundana Gollamudi and fourth-placed Bella Reid, who were on 3.5 each, and fifth-placed Esther Mullings (3).
The Harold Chan Open was organised by the Jamaica Chess Federation. The federation noted that 113 people participated in four sections during the two-day event.
