Trainer Jason DaCosta unearths promising talent in foreigner Dothraki
Champion trainer Jason DaCosta is cautiously optimistic about the potential of his new four-year-old American-bred bay colt, Dothraki. The colt, specifically brought in the island for the Mouttet Mile in December, made a winning debut in the Vassel “Jolly Man” Najair Memorial Cup on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
Dothraki dominated the field of Overnight Allowance horses, winning by a length and a quarter over 5 ½ furlongs (1,100m) in an impressive time of 1:05.4 (23.2 x 47.1 x 59.3).
DaCosta believes Dothraki is “something special” but emphasised that the colt is still only 50 per cent prepared.
“Well he looks like something special. He is about 50 per cent and so this is a big achievement,” DaCosta said.
“Hopefully, he keeps sound, healthy, and continues to train well. I was worried though because…he was 50 per cent prepared and I was always nervous that he was going to get tired. But his class carried him through the race,” the three-time champion conditioner stated.
With Dothraki’s impressive debut, DaCosta is already eyeing the Port Royal Sprint as a potential next start, followed by the coveted US$300,000 Mouttet Mile.
“He can only get better from this. With him getting fitter, anything is possible,” DaCosta added.
Breaking well from the starting gates, Dothraki quickly settled into a rhythm, surging to the front and leading
Incredible Jo (Raddesh Roman) and A Gift From Ben (Ramon Nepare) into the half-mile turn (800m).
As they entered the straight, jockey Robert Halledeen used his hands and heels to urge Dothraki on, building a strong advantage. Despite only being asked to run in the final furlong and a half (300m), Dothraki crossed the line with authority, securing a convincing win. Digital One (Dane Dawkins) and Teflon Don (Shaheem Gordon) finished second and third, respectively.
Dothraki is bred by Into Mischief out of the Empire Maker mare Vanquished. He is owned by Carlton Watson.
