Transport Authority launches Operation Ride Safe
The Transport Authority in collaboration with Jamaica Constabulary Force and Island Traffic Authority intensified its road operations in the Kingston Metropolitan Transport Region (KMTR) on Tuesday, with the launch of Operation Ride Safe, specifically targeting public passenger vehicle (PPV) operators who are not conforming with the Transport Act and Regulations.
Under Operation Ride Safe, PPVs were being checked for loud and lewd music, dark tints, unapproved markings, defective vehicles, uniforms and badges.
Four hundred and thirty-four vehicles were checked on October 21, 2025. Of that amount, 102 summonses were served, 88 tints were removed, 47 inappropriate graphics were removed, 23 licence plates were removed, 54 operators were ticketed by the police, and one vehicle was seized.
Managing Director Ralston Smith is reiterating that the Transport Authority has adopted a zero-tolerance approach and as such will continue to implement and enforce the standards for the operations of public transportation services in order to ensure the safety and security of the commuting public as well as that of other road users. He urged all public passenger vehicle operators to abide by the relevant regulations, as those found in breach will be prosecuted by the authority’s route inspector and police in accordance with the provisions of the law. Operators who continue to violate the law in this regard face the possibility of having their road licences suspended or revoked by the authority.
Smith stressed that the comfort level of the service offered by PPV operators must improve. To this end, he emphasised that the authority will be relentless in its pursuit to restore the balance of order and improved service quality in the sector.
Operation Ride Safe is expected to be taken island wide in the coming days and will continue over the next few weeks.
