KINGSTON, Jamaica — As forecasts indicate the approach of severe weather from Tropical Storm Melissa, the Construction Industry Council (CIC) is urging all member organisations to take immediate steps to safeguard their workers, worksites, and assets.

The Council is also appealing to members of the public to exercise caution around construction zones and to avoid unsecured or partially completed sites during and after the storm.

Those living in houses made of board or timber are especially encouraged to take extra precautions to secure and batten down their roofs and structures while conditions remain calm.

“The safety of our population and, by extension, the workforce, as well as the protection of our worksites, must remain our highest priority,” the Council stated. “We are urging all members to review their emergency procedures and implement precautionary measures without delay.”

The CIC outlined several key safety actions to be taken and is urging persons to:

-Secure all loose materials, tools, and equipment.

-Inspect and reinforce scaffolding, cranes, and temporary structures.

-Power down and protect electrical systems to prevent water damage.

-Ensure all personnel are aware of evacuation and communication protocols.

-Monitor official weather updates and cease operations when conditions become unsafe.

The Council emphasised that storm preparedness is not only a compliance matter, it is a duty of care. Taking early and decisive action, it said, helps prevent injuries, property damage, and operational disruption.

The Council said it continues to work closely with industry partners to promote safety and resilience across the construction sector. Additional safety tips and resources will be shared by the CIC during and after the storm.
