#EyeOnMelissa: NMIA to temporarily close at 9pm as Melissa approaches island
KINGSTON, Jamaica – PAC Kingston Airport Limited (PACKAL), operator of Norman Manley International Airport (NMIA), has advised that the airport will close at 9:00 tonight following the departure of the final scheduled flight Saturday.
“All flights today will operate as planned with no cancellations. This, as Jamaica prepares for the passage of Tropical Storm Melissa,” said PACKAL in a press release.
It noted that airport officials have been monitoring the storm and are being guided by the latest (11:00am) bulletin released by the Meteorological Service of Jamaica.
“Per the bulletin, the island is under hurricane warning with tropical storm force winds to initially affect the island, mainly over eastern parishes tonight and hurricane conditions expected by Sunday or Monday.
“Once the storm passes, comprehensive assessments will be done, and the public will be advised on the status and reopening of the airport,” added the release.
Meanwhile, PACKAL is urging passengers to stay updated with advisories from their respective airlines and to make any adjustments to their reservations, including rebooking, before travelling to the airport.
It said its top priority remains the safety and well-being of its passengers and airport workers. PACKAL has promised to work with all the relevant authorities and has advised that updates on airport operations will be communicated via the following channels:
