#EyeOnMelissa: Sangster International Airport closes as hurricane nears
ST JAMES, Jamaica — Operations at the Sangster International Airport (SIA) in Montego Bay have been temporarily suspended as Hurricane Melissa approaches Jamaica.
In a statement on Sunday, MBJ Airports Limited, operators of the facility, said the decision was made in the interest of passenger and staff safety. The public is being urged not to travel to the airport during the closure.
Following the passage of the hurricane, airport authorities will carry out a full assessment of the facility to determine when it will be safe to resume operations.
“When the airport reopens, passengers are asked to confirm their flight status with their airlines before travelling,” MBJ advised, adding that airline contact information is available on its website.
MBJ said it will continue to monitor the situation and share updates on its website and official social media platforms.
