#EyeOnMelissa: ‘All when it’s category 6, mi not moving’, says Port Royal resident
KINGSTON, Jamaica — A resident of Port Royal says he will not be evacuating the seaside community to seek safer grounds in a shelter as Hurricane Melissa is expected to make landfall on the island later Monday evening to Tuesday.
Roy Brown, in an interview with Observer Online on Monday, recalled previous unfortunate events that reportedly occurred during Hurricane Ivan when Portland residents sought shelter at the National Arena.
“No, no, we’re not going to do that. As long as I know Hurricane, from Gilbert, [I] never leave here yet. What happened to the people weh leave here, I think it’s Dean and go to the stadium. And it never worked out good for them. My lady was one who feel the blunt of what take place at the area. And it wasn’t nice,” he said.
He further alleged that residents were transported from Port Royal to the National Arena but had to walk home following the passing of the Hurricane.
“Them take us from here, carry us to the stadium. When they’re supposed to come back for you to carry you back home, there’s nobody to carry you back home. They have to foot it home from stadium. Walk from stadium, come straight back to Port Royal. That wasn’t lovely and then the thief and the molestation with them carrying on at the stadium that time.
“All the people in back went that time. They said they won’t be going back. They’d rather die here because it wasn’t lovely. But me, myself, I don’t believe I can run from death. So anyway, the father ready for me. Me know him can take me, so me not running. So mi stay out in every weather, and this one, make no difference. All when it is category six, mi not moving,” Brown said.
