AA assessing post-storm relief needs for islands hit by Melissa
AMERICAN Airlines (AA), in its latest update on Hurricane Melissa, said it is working with community partners to assess needs and prepare to support post-storm relief efforts in Caribbean territories impacted by the storm, including Jamaica.
The airlines said it is closely monitoring Hurricane Melissa following its landfall in Jamaica, with top priority being the safety of its customers and team members, support for evacuation efforts, provision of additional flexibility, and assistance to communities affected by the hurricane.
American has suspended operations at Norman Manley International Airport, Ian Fleming International, and Sangster International due to airport closures, and is currently evaluating operations at other airports in the region based on the latest weather forecasts.
Melissa is expected to impact Cuba, The Bahamas, and Turks and Caicos Islands where AA operates, after leaving Jamaica.
The update issued Tuesday said a travel alert has been in place since October 24, 2025 and has now been expanded to include travel to and from eight airports in the path of Hurricane Melissa: Kingston, Montego Bay, and Ocho Rios, Jamaica; George Town, The Bahamas; Holguin and Santiago de Cuba, Cuba; Providenciales and South Caicos, Turks and Caicos Islands.
“Customers have the flexibility to change their plans through November 1 and can reschedule their travel for a future date [using] onaa.com, the American app, or by contacting reservations at 800-433-7300 in the United States or Canada,” AA said.
“To help customers depart Jamaica ahead of the hurricane’s arrival, we operated an extra flight from Montego Bay to Miami on October 26 before the airport closed. Today, we are focused on helping customers who want to depart Turks and Caicos ahead of the hurricane’s arrival.
“We have added one extra flight from Providenciales (PLS) to Miami and have upgraded an existing flight to a larger aircraft to accommodate more customers,” the airline advised. We’re sending relief supplies to PLS on regularly scheduled flights.”
American said it has capped fares for all direct flights departing from airports covered by the travel alert.
“From now through November 11, AAdvantage members can earn 10 miles for every dollar donated to the Red Cross, with a minimum US$25 donation. We are working with our community partners to assess needs and prepare to support their post-storm relief efforts,” AA said in the update.
