Concerns about the support Jamaica site
Dear Editor,
I write to express grave concern regarding the tone, presentation, and overall messaging of the recently launched supportjamaica.gov.jm website. While the initiative’s stated purpose to facilitate relief efforts and assist those affected by natural disasters is commendable, its execution leaves much to be desired.
The prominent superimposed image of the prime minister on the homepage is tone-deaf, insensitive and, frankly, arrogant. At a time when thousands of Jamaicans will struggle to recover from Hurricane Melissa, with many still awaiting assistance after Hurricane Beryl, this kind of political imagery is deeply inappropriate. It shows a troubling lack of humility and common sense.
Additionally, the website’s development by Amber Group raises serious questions about who is providing oversight for the funds being collected and how transparency and accountability will be ensured. The public deserves to know exactly how donations are managed, who audits them, and whether any political influence or private interests are involved.
Jamaicans are understandably cautious when it comes to government-managed platforms, especially those involving money. Trust is fragile and must be earned through openness and non-partisanship.
I, therefore, call on the relevant authorities to remove all political imagery, clearly identify the independent oversight mechanism, and ensure that supportjamaica.gov.jm operates as a transparent, national humanitarian platform, free of politics and guided solely by the needs of our people.
