#MelissaAftermath: Purkiss appeals for support for residents in Hanover Eastern
HANOVER, Jamaica—Member of Parliament for Hanover Eastern Andrea Purkiss is appealing for support to assist residents in her constituency who were hard hit by Hurricane Melissa.
Purkiss, in an update on Thursday, shared that there has been severe damage across Eastern Hanover, leaving some residents marooned in their communities.
“A lot of homes, a lot of houses are down. Roofs are gone and it’s just a struggle across the board in every area. There is no area really that has been saved,” she said.
Purkiss noted that she was also marooned in Cascade following the hurricane, however residents from Jericho, Clermont and Cascade assisted in clearing the roadway.
“I was marooned in. I could not leave Cascade until this morning, and I want to take the opportunity to thank the residents from Clermont that came out very early in the morning, from Jericho, and from Cascade as well, to assist me in cleaning miles and miles, over 18 miles, of roadways so I could get to the main. I am here now on the main and I am heading up into the Hopewell area. I went through Montpelier already, and I can tell you its devastation all across the constituency,” Purkiss said.
She is now mobilising support for residents marooned in areas such as Woodsville and Cool Spring.
“We will be getting some chainsaws and some gas to assist the persons who have been marooned in. We have a number of areas, Woodsville, Cold Spring areas; they still cannot leave,” she said.
