Council of Churches offers comfort and support to grieving nation
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Council of Churches (JCC) has cited that Hurricane Melissa has inflicted “monumental damage to the country at the personal and corporate levels”.
“We have also discerned its traumatic impact on the mental well-being of many in our nation.
“We invite those who are troubled and despondent to seek the help that is available in the ministries and services of our local churches where pastoral counselling, prayer and affirming comfort are offered along with hotlines and opportunities provided by the Ministry of Health and Wellness,” said the umbrella church group in a statement.
“We know that many will require other more specialised expertise; for this, we will make the referrals as we are able,” it added.
The JCC said it observes the need for a massive outlay of resources to provide relief for the thousands who have been impacted by the hurricane. It said several local churches will need support to rebuild or repair their sanctuaries.
“In this regard, the Council has commenced its internal response mechanism to join in the efforts to bring relief to communities and families”.
The Council said the reported loss of lives is the cause of profound sadness. “We offer our sympathies and prayers to the families and friends of the deceased and trust that they will receive the special support that they will need due to their exacerbated grief”.
“We offer comfort to the nation at this time of pain and suffering with the words of the Psalmist: ‘God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble;
‘Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change, though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
‘Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble with its tumult. (Psalm 46:1-3, NRSV).
