Mr Senator shines in Announcers’ Trophy; DaCosta praises Haughton’s ride
Trainer Jason DaCosta praised apprentice rider Eric Haughton for a “perfect ride” aboard Mr Senator, who won Division Two of the $1.25-million Front Runner-sponsored Caymanas Park Announcers’ Trophy on Saturday, October 25, 2025.
Mr Senator came from behind to beat favourite Zulu Warrior, ridden by champion jockey Raddesh Roman, by ½ length in the Restricted Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over 6 ½ furlongs (1,300m). The winning time was 1:21.0.
“Eric Haughton gave him a perfect ride. He walked the inside rails the entire way, got a dream trip inside, and I think when Raddesh Roman was coming, it was pretty much over. He saved all the ground, kept out of trouble, and made the move at the right time,” DaCosta said.
“It was a perfect ride by Eric Haughton. He walked the inside rails the entire way, he got a dream trip inside, and so I think when Raddesh Roman was coming it was pretty much over.
“I wasn’t worried. I mean that ride was excellent. He saved all the ground, kept out of trouble, and made the move at the right time,” DaCosta said.
At the off, Mr Senator was unable to go with the leaders and had to settle among the backmarkers. Final Load (Roshaune Lewis) led the field ahead of Zulu Warrior, King’s Crown (Richie Shakes), and Midnight Galaxy (Emelio McLean) down the backstretch.
Approaching the half-mile (800m) turn, Mr Senator began to make his move as he rounded horses. He expertly navigated through traffic, rounding horses and slipping down into second position behind pacesetter Final Load as they entered the final stretch.
In deep stretch, Mr Senator unleashed a powerful surge on the inside rails, holding off a late challenge from Zulu Warrior to take the win.
“He is a horse that I claimed for $1.5 million and he has done well. He had placed a couple of times in the Overnight Allowance level and he now won one. He has done well. We will see how he comes out of the race and we will pick a spot for him,” DaCosta said.
