Greenwood Great House severely damaged by Hurricane Melissa
ST JAMES, Jamaica — The historic Greenwood Great House in St James was among those severely damaged by Hurricane Melissa.
The 225 year old structure lost its roof and other key parts of the infrastructure during the passage of the hurricane which laid waste to much of the western end of the island.
Located at the border of Trelawny and St James, it is one of several dwellings and businesses destroyed in that area during Tuesday’s passage of the storm which made landfall in the southwest of the island as a Category 5 hurricane.
The landmark structure served the Barrett family of which renowned poet Elizabeth Barrett-Browning is connected to and for centuries overlooked the area.
Up to the passage of the storm, it served as a museum and site for visits for individuals seeking to learn about the artifacts and homes associated with Jamaican history
