Even in sorrow, we rise
Dear Editor,
In moments like these, when nature reminds us of her strength and unpredictability, the character of a nation is revealed not only in the force of the wind, but in the courage, discipline, and compassion of its people. As Jamaica weathers the effects of Hurricane Melissa I feel compelled not to criticise or debate, but to give thanks — genuinely, sincerely, and without politics.
Thank you to the Government of Jamaica, the Office of the Prime Minister, Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, Ministry of Local Government and Community Development, Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Jamaica Public Service, National Water Commission, and every arm of the State that played a role in preparedness and response. Your vigilance, timely updates, and unwavering presence offered steadiness in uncertainty.
To the Jamaica Information Service, The Gleaner, the Jamaica Observer and the sign language interpreter, your constant flow of information anchored the nation and allowed us to move with knowledge and not fear.
To Evan Thompson and the Meteorological Service of Jamaica, your clarity, professionalism, and calm leadership guided our decision-making. Long hours, personal sacrifices, and national duty all showed. Jamaica sees you. Jamaica appreciates you.
We mourn deeply for every life lost, for every home damaged, and for every family now facing the long road to restoration. Grief is the price we pay for love, love of people, love of community, love of place. Yet even in sorrow, we rise. Jamaica has always risen.
For we are a people who understand that resilience is not just a word, it is our inheritance. From cane fields to classrooms, from hurricanes to hardships, we have learnt to bend but never break. Like the bamboo that bows in the storm but stands tall again, so too does the Jamaican spirit renew itself with faith and dignity. Let this moment remind us that nation-building does not rest solely in the hands of leaders or first responders. It rests in all of us: How we help a neighbour clear debris, how we comfort the grieving, how we share what we have, and how we nurture hope when anxiety could so easily take its place.
Hurricane Melissa tested us. But storms do not define Jamaica, our response to them does. And in this moment, we have shown who we are: strong, united, compassionate, and deeply proud of this island we call home.
May we continue to support one another, rebuild together, pray together, and stand together. And as we face the days ahead, may we remember that the sun always returns, and so does Jamaican strength.
Let us hold firm, care for each other, and move forward with gratitude, with hope, and with love for our blessed Jamaica, land we love.

A proud and thankful Jamaican
