Fiery fury
“Hurricane Melissa nuh destroy we, but this fire destroy we,” were the words of one of the fire victims at 8 Heroes Circle in Kingston, who no longer have a place to call home after more than 10 houses were gutted at the location on Sunday.
The fire victim, who gave her name as Kim, was captured by Jamaica Observer photographer Garfield Robinson holding a semi-charred Bible that was retrieved from the rubble after firefighters extinguished the blaze. Despite losing everything in the fire, she’s determined to pick herself up, as she told the Observer team that, “Once there is life, there is hope.”
Kim recounted that she was cooking dinner when she smelt smoke coming from another section of the yard, which was home to more than 40 people. Checks were made to find the source of the smoke, but the property was quickly engulfed in flames. Some of the fire victims were able to save a few items, but Kim was not so lucky.
