Gov’t distributes over 30,000 food packages to families impacted by Hurricane Melissa
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has distributed over 30,000 food packages thus far to households which were impacted by Category Five Hurricane Melissa.
The relief operations were coordinated in all 14 parishes alongside partners including the Jamaica Defence Force, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, Food for the Poor, Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association, members of the private sector and several faith-based and community organisations.
To date, 22,156 packages were distributed directly by the ministry, while private sector and partner contributions accounted for an additional 8,500 packages.
Portfolio Minister Pearnel Charles Jr commended the collective effort, saying, “Through partnership, foresight and unity, we have demonstrated that effective disaster response depends not only on preparedness but on compassion and collaboration.”
The ministry said it continues to coordinate with parish offices and humanitarian partners to reach isolated communities and maintain support to the most vulnerable.
