WATCH: St Elizabeth police helping to connect residents with loved ones through Starlink
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica — The St Elizabeth police are allowing residents of the Brompton community access to its mobile Starlink service to combat connectivity issues caused by Hurricane Melissa.
Head of the St Elizabeth police, Superintendent Coleridge Minto, said the initiative aims to restore communication between residents and their loved ones.
“My team and I, we are currently along the Brompton main road and we have been into a number of communities— Brompton, Spring Park, Speculation,” Minto shared.
He emphasised that this effort isn’t about law enforcement, but about offering critical intervention during a time of need.
“Today’s initiative is not about operations, but intervention… The JCF (Jamaica Constabulary Force) vehicles are equipped with Star-Link devices, and we are allowing members of the community to be able to connect to the devices,” he explained.
Minto added that the mobile units have been deployed across several areas, including Black River and the Siloah/Maggotty area.
“As our patrol goes across, particularly in the affected areas, community members can benefit,” he said, expressing appreciation to the commissioner for supporting the effort.
“As you can see, many persons are coming, several persons who are hearing they’re just coming to this location and connecting their devices. And we’re very pleased to serve the public in another way than what they are accustomed to,” he said, adding that JCF is a force for good.
One resident, Jamar Allen, told Observer Online he was grateful for this initiative.
“Bless up to the police officer fi weh dem a do…Because [a lot] of persons stand up here for days cyah get to reach out to them family.”
He added, “Mi respect unuh for the job you are doing through the little storm right now where people can feel safe.”
