Transport Authority warns public passenger vehicles against ‘exorbitant prices’
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Transport Authority is warning public passenger vehicle (PPV) operators to immediately stop the illegal practice of raising fares following the passing of Hurricane Melissa.
According to the authority, several PPV operators have increased their fares since the Category Five storm hit Jamaica last Tuesday.
Managing Director Ralston Smith says it is both unlawful and a violation of commuters’ rights.
Smith reminded operators that demanding more than the approved fare breaches the Road Traffic Act and could result in severe penalties.
“In keeping with section 68 (1) of the Road Traffic Act, operators who continue to overcharge passengers could have their road licences suspended or revoked,” Smith cautioned.
The authority is also urging commuters to avoid unlicensed vehicles, noting that these operators are often the ones charging “exorbitant prices”.
Licensed public transport vehicles can be identified by their red licence plates and the light blue Transport Authority sticker on the windshield, valid until 2026.
Members of the public are being encouraged to report incidents of overcharging by calling (876) 926-8912 or sending WhatsApp messages to (876) 551-8196.
Reports should include the licence plate number, route and any available photos or videos.
