Downsound Entertainment, D’Yani and Marcy Chin bring hurricane relief to western Jamaica
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Downsound Entertainment (DSE), the powerhouse behind Reggae Sumfest and Freedom Street, joined forces with artistes D’Yani, Marcy Chin, and YoungWildApache to bring critical relief supplies to communities ravaged by Hurricane Melissa.
The team journeyed through Santa Cruz and Middle Quarters in St Elizabeth, and Dean’s Valley in Westmoreland, offering comfort and much-needed assistance to families rebuilding their lives after the storm.
Spearheaded by DSE, the distribution drive provided care packages filled with non-perishable food items, baby formula, pampers, bottled water, tarpaulin, comforters, and mini tents for those who lost homes or suffered significant damage.
CEO of Downsound Entertainment Joe Bogdanovich said the effort reflects the company’s ongoing commitment to stand with Jamaicans in times of crisis.
“Music connects us, but community sustains us,” he said. “Downsound has always believed in giving back, especially when our people are hurting. Seeing the devastation first-hand was heart-breaking but also inspiring because Jamaicans are resilient. We’re proud to lend a hand and will continue supporting rebuilding efforts wherever we can.”
Artiste D’Yani described the visit as a deeply emotional experience.
“It was heart-wrenching for me. Seeing it in person gave me a deeper sense of gratitude for life. The people were beyond grateful and truly needed the help,” he shared, crediting DSE manager Dwight “Bub” James for coordinating the outreach.
For Marcy Chin, the journey was eye-opening.
“The further we went, the more overwhelming the damage became. Yet, the people remained hopeful and thankful,” she said. “One woman told me her house was destroyed but insisted we help her neighbour, who had lost her daughter. That moment broke my heart.”
YoungWildApache echoed similar sentiments, expressing gratitude for the opportunity to contribute.
“Being on the ground and seeing the impact of Hurricane Melissa first-hand really hit me. I’m just thankful we could help bring a bit of hope to those in need,” he said.
DSE and its partners are meeting with key agencies to identify additional ways to assist and provide support. A clean-up team has also been mobilised in St James, reinforcing Downsound Entertainment’s commitment to using music and community action to uplift Jamaica.
