Govana, Guinness partnership takes on philanthropy
Dancehall artiste Govana says he is looking forward to a meaningful partnership with corporate brand Guinness as the new face of their ‘A Lovely Day for a Guinness’ campaign.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, Govana shared that the deal signifies a new era for dancehall and dancehall artistes as it indicates corporate Jamaica’s growing confidence in curators of the genre.
“It feels good to be embraced by corporate Jamaica. As a dancehall act, we know that’s not always common, because it can be high risk at times. So when a dancehall artiste is selected in that lane we know they have all the attributes to carry out the work set at hand,” he shared. “And I think I am an individual who knows what is right. I know time and place and all of that. I know that once aligned with certain brands some things can’t be done or said. I am happy to be aligned with a brand of this magnitude, and so I will pull this off for Guinness.”
Describing Govana as “one of the most compelling voices in dancehall”, Guinness Brand Manager Nadine Hylton said the brand is looking forward to a fulfilling partnership.
“Govana is versatile, respected, culturally influential, and he moves the needle without losing his identity. That mirrors Guinness’ own legacy of boldness, resilience, and staying true to one’s roots. Having him as the face of its ‘A Lovely Day for a Guinness” is a great brand and cultural alignment,” she said. “He brings energy and a real emotional connection to the campaign. Dancehall is one of Jamaica’s strongest cultural assets, so for corporate brands to invest in that ecosystem is not just good marketing, it supports nation-building.”
Following the alliance announcement late last month, just before Hurricane Melissa ravaged the western part of Jamaica, Govana shared that it has been a long-standing dream of his to support his fellow Jamaicans. The Spanish Town native shared at the time that giving back to communities will be one of the ways he manoeuvres his new role with Guinness.
“As the face of the new Guinness campaign, you’re going to see me working with the brand in a lot of different ways. From ads to online content to the stories we share to all the events we bring to life. I have a few personal projects in the mix, which will give me a chance to give back to communities. I always jump at the chance to give back to my hometown in Spanish Town, so we’re gonna work hand in hand with Guinness to do that,” he assured.
The effects and devastation caused the recent hurricane has brought this into clear focus and the artiste said he is looking forward to the partnership offering aid to those most in need.
