Market Bag: Escallion up to $1,200 as food prices soar after Melissa
KINGSTON, Jamaica — With farmers across Jamaica taking a massive hit from Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, food prices at the Coronation Market are on the rise.
Among the items attracting higher prices this week are escallion, which is being sold for $1,000-$1,200 a pound; tomato, which is being sold for $400 a pound; carrot, also $400 a pound; and scotch bonnet pepper, going for $300-$500 per pound.
Market Bag host Brittania Witter went to the downtown Kingston market to report on the escalating costs.
