UPDATE: Investigation launched into Rio Cobre drowning incident, victim identified
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica — The Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau (IPROB) and the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom) have launched investigations into the drowning death of a man in the Rio Cobre in Bog Walk Gorge, St Catherine on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased has been identified as 73-year-old Melton Smith, a farmer of Mickelton Meadows, Linstead. Smith was a suspect in an alleged case of abduction and carnal abuse.
According to police reports, around 1:00 pm, Smith was being transported from Linstead to Spanish Town when, upon reaching the Flat Bridge area, he reportedly jumped from the police service vehicle and fell into the Rio Cobre.
He was later pulled from the river by members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the Fire Brigade, and taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
