Healing has begun
Dear Editor,
Two weeks have passed since Hurricane Melissa battered much of our island, leaving behind a trail of heartbreak, loss, and disbelief. Jamaica still feels heavy with grief, and the wounds of the storm remain raw. Yet even in the midst of destruction, something sacred endures — the quiet, unyielding flame of hope.
The scenes of devastation remind us of our vulnerability, but they also reveal our strength. We have seen it before in the aftermath of storms that tore through our shores and our hearts. Each time Jamaica has risen from the rubble, steadied by faith and strengthened by unity. It is in our nature to rebuild, to rise, to begin again.
Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is close to the broken-hearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” These words hold new meaning in this moment. For though many are broken, we are not abandoned. Though we mourn, we are not without comfort. God walks among the ruins, whispering peace into chaos and planting seeds of renewal in the soil of despair.
This is a time for kindness and connection, for helping one another find steady ground again. Let this be a season of grace, a moment when we choose to lift instead of divide, to comfort instead of criticise, and to rebuild not only homes, but hearts. Jamaica’s greatest strength has always been its people, and that strength shines brightest when tested.
Rebuilding will take time, but healing has already begun. From the ashes new life will emerge. From the storm new faith will rise. Jamaica’s story has never been one of defeat; it has always been one of resilience.
And, as we look towards the days ahead, may we remember this truth: Storms may bend us, but they will never break us. The light always returns.
