Cephas buoyed by goal against T&T
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago — Reggae Boy Renaldo Cephas is seen by fans as a vital player in Jamaica’s attack. He reminded all of his importance with the goal he produced here in a 1-1 draw with Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) on Thursday night.
In a tense FIFA World Cup qualifier played against the backdrop of regional rivalry, high stakes, and a stadium buzzing with noise, Cephas carved out a moment of pure individual brilliance.
In the 53rd minute, Cephas sprinted onto a long diagonal pass down the left flank, sprinting past his marker before darting inside. This featured a weaving solo run with quick touches, a drop of the shoulder, him cutting inside then finishing at T&T goalkeeper Denzil Smith’s far post.
The goal silenced the home supporters and gave Jamaica a 1-0 lead that seemed poised to put them on the brink of qualification.
“Everyone knew what this game meant. Everyone knew that we had a job to do,” Cephas said. “To score this goal in this moment, I was so happy, the team was so happy so, it’s just unfortunate that we gave up that goal after.”
The draw means Jamaica’s path to the World Cup now comes down to one final showdown against Curaçao on Tuesday night at the National Stadium at 7:00 pm.
If the Reggae Boyz win, they qualify automatically. Anything less makes their path bumpy and uncertain.
“We need to go into the game with the same game plan and add something to the team and for sure, we’ll get the win,” Cephas said.
For him, the stakes go beyond personal achievement. He understands the weight of history and the pressure to pull off Jamaica’s first berth at football’s showpiece tournament since France ’98.
He says a return to the World Cup would be transformative, not just for players, but for millions of Jamaicans locally and in the diaspora still coming to terms with the devastation left by Hurricane Melissa a few weeks ago.
