George Wright pleads for non-political distribution of hurricane relief supplies
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica – Former Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Central, the Jamaica Labour Party’s George Wright claims some constituents are not receiving hurricane relief packages because of their affiliation with the JLP.
“I went to some communities and people are telling me that [Member of Parliament] Dwayne Vaz says he is not giving them anything because they didn’t vote for him,” Wright told the Jamaica Observer. “We are in a crisis. No time to politicise these things.”
Wright says he has no care packages at the moment to distribute. He said his children brought a few supplies some days ago and distributed them, but it was “a drop in the bucket”.
“I have to stay out by Ferris and lay wait the [convoys] coming in and beg them to go to certain communities. Sometimes they say they can’t and sometimes they say they will try,” Wright said.
He said on several occasions he has received a small number of items to distribute to vulnerable residents in the constituency who are unable to leave their homes to go into the crowd.
“At one of the locations I saw a young man who was sitting in a car. He asked if he could get one of the bags because he can’t go to the truck to get any as he has one leg,” Wright said.
He said order is needed at the giveaway sites, such as ensuring a line is formed.
“And no look innah face, everybody has to benefit,” sheaid. “This is the cry right across the constituency.”
It is the latest partisan finger-pointing over hurricane relief supplies in the constituency, where Wright was unseated by the People’s National Party’s Vaz in the September 3 general election.
Vaz earlier this month accused Wright of commandeering a shipment of relief supplies sent to the constituency in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Melissa. Prime Minister Andrew Holness refuted the allegation.
