Manchester honours educators, firefighters in Empowerment and Recognition Programme
MANCHESTER, Jamaica – Eight distinguished educators and three outstanding firefighters were recently honoured by the Manchester Empowerment and Recognition Programme.
Hosted by Garfield S Green, Custos Rotulorum for Manchester, the Manchester Empowerment and Recognition Programme was launched under the theme “I Am Built for Greatness: Igniting Passion in the Lives of Our Students.”
The programme was initially developed to recognise educators, but was expanded to include firefighters for their profound contributions to nation-building, community resilience, and personal transformation.
In the latest staging recently, eight educators were presented with the Custos’ Award for Excellence in Education, honouring their exceptional values, attitudes, and service in support of national development through education. These individuals have demonstrated their commitment to shaping character, inspiring excellence, and uplifting the next generation, organisers said.
Meanwhile, three firefighters were recognised as builders of bravery for their fearless service and dedication to preserving lives and properties. Organisers said their courage reflects the values first nurtured in classrooms and carried into the field with strength and resolve, noting that firefighters run into dangerous situations that the ordinary person runs from.
Guest speaker Joan A Davis-Williams, education consultant and trainer, delivered a powerful address urging the nation-builders to reflect on personal growth and professional purpose. She likened life’s burdens to a bag of things we carry, encouraging attendees to sift through their load in order to soar like eagles. Using cutlery as a metaphor, she emphasised the need to remain sharp, polished, and ready to serve with excellence.
Organisers hailed the generous support from key sponsors, namely British Council; Juici Patties; The Verandah; Toyota Jamaica; GraceKennedy; J Wray & Nephew; and Mandeville Spa and Wellness Resort.
In his opening remarks, Custos Green reflected: “Let today be more than a ceremony. Let it be a reminder that greatness is not just taught, it is ignited. Every time an educator steps into a classroom, they light a spark that may one day illuminate the world. And every time a firefighter answers a call, they carry that spark into action.”
