Speid calls for huge support for Boyz in do-or-die Curacao clash
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad and Tobago — Jamaica Football Federation Technical Committee Chairman Rudolph Speid has issued a rallying call to the nation ahead of what he describes as one of the most significant matches in the country’s football history.
His appeal comes as Jamaica prepare to face Curaçao in a decisive FIFA World Cup qualifier at the National Stadium in Kingston on Tuesday at 7:00 pm.
This is a match the Reggae Boyz must win to secure automatic qualification.
“Next Tuesday is a pivotal day in the history of Jamaica,” Speid said, with the stakes and the symbolism of the moment in mind. “I’d like everybody to come out and support the national team. We need a victory in the National Stadium, and remember, wear your yellow.”
Speid’s comments follow Jamaica’s 1-1 draw with Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) in Port of Spain on Thursday night, a result that saw the Reggae Boyz slip to second in Group B on 10 points. Curaçao’s 7-0 win over Bermuda pushed them to the top of the table on 11 points, meaning Jamaica now need nothing less than a win to finish first.
The call for unity comes in a milestone year for local football, as 2025 marks the 100th anniversary of Jamaica’s first international match.
With T&T (six points) and Bermuda (zero) now out of contention, Group B’s drama comes down to the top-of-the-table clash.
Winning Group B would seal Jamaica’s place at the World Cup and Speid says the entire nation has a role in making it possible.
