Sasha Bling celebrates 10-year milestone
Creative now looking to build legacy through BlingBlang Works
Sasha-gay Roache, known professionally as Sasha Bling, wears many hats. The multi-talented creative is an artiste manager, publicist, writer, producer, mother, and video director.
Ten years strong in her capacity as video editor, Roache, head of BlingBlang Works, has produced work for the likes of I Octane, Alkaline, Vybz Kartel, and Spice.
Today, with that impressive track record, the creative is looking to build a legacy as one of the leading females in a largely male-dominated industry.
“As a woman, you have to work extremely hard to land opportunities and to keep them coming in this business,” she told the Jamaica Observer. “But while it’s a male-dominated industry, I don’t look at the industry from a gender standpoint. I can do what a lot of people cannot, and vice versa, and so I prefer to focus on ability, not gender. The only pressure I face is that which I place on myself to elevate after every project.”
“I am in the business of growth, and I prioritise development in one’s area of expertise. By doing the necessary work, I command the kind of respect that my talent deserves,” she continued. “I do not sit around complaining about the challenges I may face. I’m very resourceful, so even when I was put in positions to fail, I prevailed gracefully, and my work speaks for itself.”
Having received her break in the entertainment industry as the host of the FIWI Choice Top 10 Chart TV show Gossip Girl, Roache has always had big dreams. In fact, as a host, she romanticised the idea of working in production long before stepping out of the spotlight.
Hoping to turn those dreams into reality, Roache embarked on studies at the Media Institute of Technology, where she honed her video directing skills.
Aside from working with some of the biggest names in the music industry, Roache has carved her name into the ‘million-views club’ as far as production personnel are concerned after her work on I Octane’s Opportunist, Alkaline’s Fleek, Vybz Kartel’s Any Weather, and Spice’s God Bless Me all crossed the million-views mark on YouTube.
Toasting to that particular accomplishment, Roache said it’s an amazing feeling to have her work reap meaningful rewards.
“It’s an amazing experience. Knowing that over 100 million people have seen my work is still a crazy thought. I love it! As a teen, I wanted the world to know my name, and this is pretty close,” she said excitedly. “With a few more projects on the way, it just feels so cool. I’m grateful. Big up God and my team!”
Still, even with all she’s achieved, Roache believes there’s a lot more to learn, especially as she aspires towards an empire her daughter can inherit.
“Nahbi [her daughter] is very much a part of everything I do. She loves music and wants to do it too. But I want her to have respect for the entire process, so she comes on certain sets, travels with me, attends events and shows. We talk a lot about my role and how it impacts us,” she shared as she elaborated on her legacy. “She’s very fascinated by it. She loves being on set, watching the cameras, lights, and how everything comes together. She’s curious and asks a lot of questions, which I love because it shows she’s paying attention. She already has an eye for creativity and sometimes gives her own little ‘director’s notes’.”
Already, her daughter has produced credits on I Octane’s Opportunist music video.
“I was born to create. It’s who I am. As long as I live I’ll be creating. I’m grateful to have made it this far, but this is just the beginning. There’s always room to grow and do better, and this level, while very important, is a joke compared to what’s to come,” she signposted. “I’m waiting for Rihanna to call me when R9 is ready. I’d also love to work with artistes like Chronixx, Sean Paul, Shaggy, Popcaan, and Lila Ike, and, of course, working with Vybz Kartel now that he’s out of prison would definitely be a vibe.”
Sasha Bling has her sights set on being a force to be reckoned with the in the music and entertainment space.
“When we leave this Earth, we leave with nothing; all that remains is what we’ve done, who we’ve impacted, and the people who will tell our story. I want my legacy to be great,” she continued. “My children will be proud when they’re grown, not just because of the work I’ve done, but because of who I am and the foundation I’ve set for them.”
