2025/26 NFL season: Week 11 was historic, Week 12 the Chiefs vs Colts, plus more
Last Sunday, Week 11 of the 2025/26 National Football League (NFL) regular season, was historic in so many ways that space would not allow for all the highlights. The day was filled with intriguing matchups, interlaced with unexpected surprises, and almost all delivered as promised. These are the really impressive highpoints of last weekend.
•In a further effort to the international appeal of the NFL, the Sunday ticket kicked off early in Madrid, Spain, with the Washington Commanders losing 16-13 in overtime to the Miami Dolphins at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Europe’s third-largest stadium behind the Camp Nou in Barcelona and Wembley Stadium in London, and home to the world-famous Real Madrid football club. This marked the final of the seven international games this season, but the first NFL game to take place in Spain.
•The Tampa Bay Buccaneers lost 44-32 to the Buffalo Bills, after quarterback (QB) Josh Allen threw three passing touchdowns and scored three rushing in the win. Allen, the league’s reigning Most Valuable Player (MVP), bounced back from two first-half interceptions to finish with 317 passing yards and the enviable record of the most career games with at least three pass touchdowns and one rush touchdown (10), breaking a tie with Tom Brady and Drew Brees for the most such games all time. Additionally, in the history of the NFL, there have only been three games with a QB having three passing and three rushing touchdowns: Allen in this game against the Buccaneers, Allen in 2024 against the Rams (in a 44-42 loss) and Hall-of-Famer Otto Graham in the 1954 NFL Championship Game against the Detroit Lions.
•In the battle of 7-2 teams, the Los Angeles Rams survived a heavyweight showdown in the National Football Conference (NFC) West, after bettering the Seattle Seahawks 21-19, in a hotly contested encounter. The Seahawks QB, Sam Darnold, threw four interceptions in the loss, but the team still had an opportunity for the win, save for a missed field goal as time expired. The Rams now have the inside track to win the division, but there are still more than a handful of games to play, so it should be interesting.
•The Kansas City Chiefs, who have won the American Football Conference (AFC) West division for nine straight seasons, find their reign in serious jeopardy following a 19-16 away defeat at the hands of the Denver Broncos. For the Broncos, it’s their eighth straight win, which keeps their home-record intact (6-0), and which puts them slightly ahead of the New England Patriots for the No 1 seed in the AFC, who also have an active eight-game win streak. The Broncos have now beaten both of last February’s Super Bowl contenders and will enjoy their bye this weekend, but the Patriots are expected to edge forward in the AFC standing when they take on a fading Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.
•Carolina Panthers’ QB Bryce Young threw for a franchise-record 448 yards against the No 1 pass defence of the Atlanta Falcons, as his team pulled off an exciting overtime 30-37 victory.
•Tight end Mark Andrews, career leader in touchdown catches (56) for the Baltimore Ravens, became the franchise’s leader in receiving yards (5,806) after passing Derrick Mason (5,777) during Sunday’s 23-16 win over the Cleveland Browns in a game where he scored his first rushing touchdown.
That said, there are a few very enticing games in the Week 12 line-up that should not be missed, but none more so than the Kansas City Chiefs (5-5) vs Indianapolis Colts (8-2). The Chiefs can all but forget about winning the AFC West at this stage and focus on making the playoffs. They have a very tough outing on Sunday, but looking down the road, the path to the postseason doesn’t get much easier. They are favoured at home by JustBet, but that position did not help against the Broncos last Sunday, and it will mean very little to the visiting Colts this Sunday.
The Colts have won this matchup seven of the last 10 meetings, but the last encounter was in September 2022. However, Indianapolis has improved significantly this year, while Kansas City’s performance has declined, and they have looked like a far cry from the team that made it to the last three Super Bowls. QB Patrick Mahomes is leading a very efficient offence that’s averaging 38.8 yards per drive (second only to the Colts’ 40.6), with 48.9 per cent of their drives ending in a score, but the only team to better them in this category is this week’s opponent, with 56.7 per cent of drives ending in a score.
The Kansas City defence has allowed only 181 points this season (third-best in the league), but Indianapolis has the league’s top offence in total yards and points per game, so a defence fighting for its playoff life will be up against an offence battling for the league’s best record. The Colts have been one of the surprise teams this season, but it wouldn’t come as a surprise if they pull off a win in Arrowhead Stadium this Sunday afternoon.
The weekend is chock-full of other highly anticipated encounters, including the Dallas Cowboys (4-5-1) welcoming the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles (8-2) into AT&T Stadium, which should not be missed, and every matchup will invariably take on the intensity of a playoff game. Six weekends remain in the regular season, following Week 12, and no team with playoff ambitions can afford to lose ground. The push to the postseason starts now and every play can make a difference.
