D&G Foundation hits the right note at DeCarteret College
$150,000-boost for music education at Manchester-based school
AS communities across Jamaica rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Melissa, the Desnoes & Geddes (D&G) Foundation is moving to strike the right note by nurturing the next generation amid the recovery.
In a gesture of compassion and continuity, the foundation has donated $150,000 to DeCarteret College to strengthen its music programme, funding the purchase of new instruments for the school’s orchestra and helping students rediscover joy, discipline, and creativity through music.
“These past weeks have tested the spirit of so many Jamaicans, and yet we continue to move forward, because that’s who we are,” said Dianne Ashton-Smith, director at the D&G Foundation.
“Supporting DeCarteret College is our way of investing not just in rebuilding structures, but in rebuilding confidence, culture, and hope. The school’s orchestra, once a proud symbol of its vibrant performing arts culture, had faced challenges due to a shortage of instruments. Now, thanks to the foundation’s support, more students will have access to hands-on learning that fuels both personal and creative growth,” added Ashton-Smith.
For DeCarteret College, the support marks a significant step towards revitalising its music department and broadening access to arts education. The school’s orchestra has long been a source of pride, but a shortage of instruments limited the number of students able to participate.
“This donation will make a tremendous difference for our students,” said Melissa Parchment-Hutchinson, head of the Performing Arts and Religious Education Department at DeCarteret College.
“Many of them are gifted and passionate about music, but haven’t had access to proper instruments. Thanks to the D&G Foundation’s support, more students will now have the opportunity to learn, perform, and grow through music,” added Parchment-Hutchinson.
According to Dennis Beckford, accountant at the D&G Foundation, the initiative highlights its belief that education and culture go hand in hand in shaping Jamaica’s future.
Beckford pointed out that since its establishment in 2006, the foundation has continued to invest in programmes that empower young people, strengthen communities, and promote national development through education, health, and social impact initiatives.
“Through contributions like this, the D&G Foundation continues to affirm its commitment to enriching lives and empowering communities while also ensuring that young Jamaicans have access to education as well as cultural experiences that inspire them to reach their full potential,” added Beckford.
