NWC says reports of sewage overflow near Coronation Market are incorrect
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The National Water Commission (NWC) is refuting recent media claims of sewage overflows in the vicinity of Coronation Market, stating that the reports are incorrect.
In a release, the commission said its technical teams conducted thorough inspections at the locations referenced in the reports namely the intersections of Rose Lane, Spanish Town Road, and Upper Oxford Street.
According to the NWC, investigations confirmed that the overflow seen in the area resulted from blocked drainage infrastructure, which is not part of the NWC’s sewage network.
The assessment further indicated that the affected drains typically carry grey water, which can become stagnant when the flow is impeded. The commission noted that these drains fall outside of the NWC’s operational responsibility.
The NWC also sought to reassure the public that its own infrastructure remains stable. It confirmed that its sewage conveyance pipelines and the nearby pumping station have experienced no operational issues since the passage of Hurricane Melissa, and that all NWC wastewater systems in the area are fully functional.
