JDSF raises over $3.1 million to support Hurricane Melissa relief efforts
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Jamaica Down’s Syndrome Foundation (JDSF) has secured more than $3.1 million in sponsorship from the second staging of its Bredrin 2K Walk, held last Sunday, at Hope Gardens.
The funds will go directly toward supporting families affected by Hurricane Melissa.
The event formed part of global observances for World Down Syndrome Awareness Month, marked in October, and brought together families, friends and supporters under the theme “Health Equity”. The family-friendly fitness walk aimed to promote inclusion, healthy lifestyles and national unity while raising awareness for Jamaicans living with Down syndrome.
Approximately 100 participants took part in this year’s walk. In addition to cash sponsorships, the foundation received significant product donations from Wisynco, including WATA, as well as biscuits and snacks from National Bakery.
To date, 10 families, primarily in western Jamaica, have already received monetary assistance totalling $225,000, along with care packages. The organisation also received an additional 50 care packages from the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) Foundation to support more families, with remaining funds to be allocated based on individual assessments of need.
Founder and Board Chair Dr Charmaine Scott, OD, noted that the walk carried special meaning as the nation recovers from Hurricane Melissa.
“Our thoughts are on those who experienced loss, disruption and hardship because of the storm,” she said. “Our nation has been reminded once more of the prayerful resilience, strength and compassion that define us as Jamaicans.”
Dr Scott added that the event symbolised inclusion, love and the resilience of the Jamaican spirit. Despite the difficulties caused by the hurricane, she said supporters continued to show unwavering commitment by turning out in solidarity.
“The event was dedicated to hope, community and resilience, honouring individuals with Down syndrome and all Jamaicans rebuilding their lives,” she added.
Executive Director of Special Projects Nadine Tarawali said the success of the walk exceeded expectations.
“This year’s Bredrin 2km Walk not only surpassed our financial goals but surpassed our hopes,” she said. “The generosity of our community is now bringing real relief and renewed strength to Down syndrome families severely affected by Hurricane Melissa. Together, we turned footsteps into impact.”
The foundation extended heartfelt thanks to its many sponsors, whose contributions made the event possible. This year’s partners included NCB Foundation, Digicel Foundation, Tim’s Big Heart Foundation, JB, National Baking Company, Texaco with Techron, CB Facey Foundation, Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF), Jamaica Public Service (JPS), Wata, Visual Vibe, LP Azar Ltd., King Alarm Systems, Major Marketing, Trademark Interactive, and ND Communications.
JDSF noted that the ongoing support reflects a shared commitment to inclusion, empowerment and nation-building through compassion and community engagement.
