Alleged attempt to bribe cop lands two men before the court
ST JAMES, Jamaica — A $5,000 note allegedly tucked beneath a Chinese passport failed to sway a cop, landing two men before the St James Parish Court on bribery charges.
Ying Lu faces charges of bribery, aiding and abetting driving without insurance, as well as aiding and abetting driving without a driver’s licence. Meanwhile, Dengzheng Lu is charged with driving without motor vehicle insurance, failing to stop at a pedestrian crossing and driving without a licence.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred around 1:19 pm on October 8 when a grey Toyota Voxy was reportedly stopped on a pedestrian crossing, blocking the crosswalk.
According to the allegations, the driver (Dengzheng Lu) exited the vehicle, walked to the rear and began unloading luggage, while another male (Ying Lu) remained nearby.
An officer on duty approached the vehicle and informed the men that they were committing the offence of failing to stop. She requested the driver’s licence. The passenger (Ying Lu), who had been observed being picked up earlier, handed over a Jamaican driver’s licence. When the officer asked for his passport, a Chinese passport bearing the passenger’s photograph was produced and reportedly had a $5,000 note tucked beneath it.
The driver was asked whether he had a driver’s licence. He admitted that he did not, explaining that it was at home and that he had only been asked to pick up the passenger. Under caution, he reportedly said, “Other officers would have taken it and just left me.”
The matter was set for case management on January 14, 2026, and bail for both men was extended.
