COLEY COMMITS
Former national assistant coach returns to national programme
FORMER Reggae Boyz Assistant Coach Miguel Coley has agreed to rejoin the national programme, signalling the first major step in Interim Head Coach Rudolph Speid’s effort to assemble a robust technical team for Jamaica’s crucial Inter-Confederation World Cup qualifying play-off next March.
Well-placed sources confirmed that Coley and the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) finalised terms yesterday. Several additional appointments are expected in the coming weeks as the federation works to have a complete staff complement in place long before the Boyz make their final push for qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Coley, now 43, will commence duties next month and returns to the national set-up with significant international experience. He was identified as the JFF’s preferred candidate for the assistant head coach position when Speid was announced on November 21, and after several days of negotiations both sides reached an agreement for his comeback.
A Pro Licence holder widely respected for his tactical insight, Coley has spent the last four seasons in the Middle East with Qatar Stars League outfit Umm Salal with whom he currently serves as head coach for the club’s reserve team.
Coley first rose to prominence during a successful period with Jamaica College, guiding the school to five Manning Cup titles. His accomplishments led to his initial role with the Reggae Boyz as assistant to former Head Coach Winfried Schäfer, with the pair later linking up again at Iranian club Esteghlal.
His international résumé grew further with assistant coaching stints at Baniyas in the United Arab Emirates in 2019 and Al-Khor in Qatar two years later.
Coley is expected to be the first of several additions to Speid’s technical staff.
Discussions are ongoing with a number of overseas-based coaches and former national players as the JFF aims to deepen the technical expertise within the programme.
Among the names being targeted is former Jamaican international Aaron Lawrence, the current head coach of the Turks and Caicos national team.
Lawrence, who earned more than 60 caps for Jamaica and featured at the 1998 World Cup, including the historic 2-1 win over Japan, is being recruited as goalkeeping coach.
Another standout from the 1998 campaign, Ricardo “Bibi” Gardner, is also expected to join the set-up to support coaching and mentorship duties. Additionally, former national wing back Tyrone Marshall, now head coach of FC Cincinnati’s reserve team, is reportedly being considered for a role.
Jamaica will face New Caledonia on March 26, 2026 in Mexico in the FIFA Inter-Confederation Play-off. If they manage to get past the Oceanic Confederation nation they will then face African team DR Congo on March 31, with the winner securing qualification to the FIFA World Cup.
The play-off path became a reality for the Jamaicans after the team failed to secure automatic qualification from the Concacaf Final Round Qualifiers following a 0-0 draw with Curacao at the National Stadium on November 18.
The result led to the resignation of Briton Steve McClaren who was appointed to the head coach role 18 months prior.
