Montague, church leaders discuss land titling and adverse possession issues
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The Ministry of Economic Growth and Infrastructure Development (MEGID) has engaged the Jamaica Umbrella Group of Churches (JUGC) in high-level talks aimed at streamlining land titling and addressing adverse possession challenges affecting churches across the island.
The meeting was led by Minister with responsibility for land titling and settlements, Robert Montague, who was joined by senior officials from the National Land Agency (NLA) and the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport (MCGES), the ministry with oversight for faith-based institutions.
Minister Montague reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to resolving long-standing land ownership issues and accelerating Jamaica’s national titling programme.
“The Government’s aim is to get titles for 100 per cent of lands. That is why this partnership is critical. Many of our churches have served their communities for generations, and they deserve a clear, affordable and accessible pathway to formal land ownership,” he said.
During the session, NLA representatives delivered a detailed presentation outlining the procedures for securing land titles, available support services, and the legal framework governing adverse possession. Church leaders participated in an interactive question-and-answer segment, raising specific concerns and receiving direct technical guidance.
Montague noted that the initiative is in keeping with a commitment made by the prime minister and forms part of the wider land reform and titling strategy aimed at increasing the number of Jamaicans, including community groups and religious organisations, with secure, registered property rights.
