2025/26 NFL season: Week 13, good luck or bad omen
Week 13 of the 2025/26 National Football League (NFL) regular season is already underway, and a Friday night game is on the cards, which means there are exactly 13 games to be played between today and Monday. The number 13 has always been synonymous with ‘bad luck’ and teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, and Baltimore Ravens, who were expected to be commanding the league, have seen their stocks plummet this season, and must be cursing their luck.
Conversely, while those teams are going through a living nightmare, the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, Seattle Seahawks, and Chicago Bears have seen their stocks soar, in a season where nothing much was expected, but they have positioned themselves as serious playoff contenders, and most are leading their respective divisions. That said, teams like the Los Angeles Rams, the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles, the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions are exactly where they were expected to be and are giving thanks to the football gods for their favourable position.
Of the 13 games remaining to complete the Week 13 line-up, only three will match two teams with winning records but, as this season has already proven, that factor will not detract from the heavy-hitting action across the league. One of the feature games will kick off this afternoon, when the surprising Bears (8-3) go roaring into Lincoln Financial Field to tackle the Eagles (8-3), in an attempt to clip their wings. Amazon, who will be streaming the game, came up with the idea in 2023, to have a game on ‘Black Friday’, to coincide with its busiest shopping day of the year, and this is the second instalment.
The Eagles have fully embraced the theme and have announced that, for the first and only time this season, they will be wearing black jerseys, black pants and black helmets for the encounter. This may be an ominous sign for their opponents but, truth be told, the Eagles – despite their record – have not really scared anyone this season. Notwithstanding, on the other side of the field, the Bears haven’t looked very deserving of their record either.
Last Sunday, Philadelphia opened a 21-0 lead on the struggling Dallas Cowboys, and appeared to be heading for an explosive win, only to collapse and lose, after failing to respond to 24 unanswered points by their opponents. On the other hand, Chicago, who has not been very convincing, enjoyed an impressive victory last Sunday over the Pittsburgh Steelers, by the score of 31-28. In the victory, quarterback (QB) Caleb Williams threw for 239 yards, going 19-for-35 (54.3 per cent) with three touchdowns and no interceptions. For clarity, his counterpart was Mason Rudolph (24-for-31, for 171 yards and a touchdown), playing for an injured Aaron Rodgers.
The defending champions are favoured by JustBet entering the matchup, but Chicago is riding a wave of momentum, from the eight wins in its last nine outings, and will be watching the tape of their opponent’s meltdown last week for keys to victory. The Eagles should secure the win this Sunday, but they will need a lot of production from running back Saquon Barkley, who finished with only 22 yards from 10 carries against the Cowboys.
Possibly the most enticing encounter of the weekend will see the galloping Colts (8-3) invite the Houston Texans (6-5) into Lucas Oil Stadium for an expected shoot-out early Sunday afternoon. The Colts have surprised everyone, maybe even themselves, and are 6-0 at home, but they are coming off a heartbreaking 20-23 away-loss to the Chiefs last Sunday, after entering the third quarter leading 20-9, then failing to score in the fourth quarter or overtime. The Texans, on the other hand, put a chokehold on the Bills last Sunday, sacking QB Josh Allen eight times and nabbing two interceptions, in a 23-19 win.
The Colts open as JustBet favourites, but on paper this is a classic clash between a top-tier defense (Houston) against a high-powered offense (Indianapolis), and the matchup will probably be decided by how well the Texans can contain running back Jonathan Taylor (1,197 rushing yards, 15 touchdowns coming in), and if C.J. Stroud lines up under center for the visitors. The Colts should win but a tight battle is anticipated, and the Texan defense should keep the difference within a field goal, or thereabout.
Another huge outing will feature a team without a winning record, as the Cleveland Browns (3-8) will welcome the San Francisco 49ers (8-4) into Huntington Bank Field early Sunday afternoon. If for nothing else, the fact that QB Shedeur Sanders will make his first start in front of the home fans is enough to make this a must-see event. The well-documented path of Sanders into the NFL has created many talking points and stirred many controversies, but his performance in his first start last Sunday was enough to make the NFL world stand up and take notice. His 11-for-20, for 209 yards, one touchdown and one interception, albeit against the lowly Las Vegas Raiders, was impressive in the 24.10 win, and Sanders, the 42nd QB to start for the Browns since 1999, became Cleveland’s first QB to win his first start since Eric Zeier in 1995.
San Francisco survived three first half interceptions from QB Brock Purdy on Monday night, to defeat the Carolina Panthers 20-9, on the strength of an inspired performance from running back Christian McCaffery (53 receiving yards, 89 rushing yards, one touchdown), who was playing against his former team for the first time. Sanders and the Browns are JustBet underdogs entering the encounter, and rightly so, but there are so many reasons that this should be watched, especially to root for a long shot, and to see if the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Myles Garrett, can add to his whopping 18 sacks this season, on pace to break the NFL record of 22.5, currently shared by Steelers’ pass rusher T.J. Watt and the New York Giants Hall-of-Famer Michael Strahan.
Most teams above 500 will be facing teams below that mark this weekend, but they can’t afford to get complacent. The number 13 is floating around the league in Week 13 and while it will mean good luck for some, for others it will be a bad omen, and they will find very little to be thankful for this Thanksgiving weekend.
