Confidence abounds ahead of qualifiers, says goalkeeper Spencer
JAMAICA’S Senior Reggae Girlz ace goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer has exuded confidence in her team ahead of today’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Qualifier against Group B opponents Dominica.
The game is set for the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground in St Lucia. Kick-off scheduled for 2:00 pm Jamaica time.
“I think the team’s looking good. We’re confident going into this game, and we can see that on the training pitch,” Spencer said during a pre-match press conference.
“Training’s been at a really high standard, and I think there’re a lot of us who haven’t been involved for a few camps and so it is nice to kind of get a large group of us back into camp. The vibe is always good in training and the intensity has gone up a notch, and I think training has been great from everyone, and everyone’s shown great attitude and application towards the sessions,” she added.
In terms of her personal mindset Spencer said she is “feeling great about Dominica’s game”.
“I mean, I’ve come off the back of a couple of injuries and I am feeling great, and [it’s] great to be here and see the girls — and obviously the coaching staff. And I think we’ve come a long way from where we were before; I think the management of training has been great.
“You know, players, if they need to be managed in certain sessions [then] it gives us the right platform to be able to perform on game day, and I think everyone integrated and [were] having open communication across staff and players. I think it’s really important; and even when we’ve not here, we’re still in,” Spencer said.
On chasing a possible third-consecutive World Cup, Spencer said: “It’s an exciting journey to be on and, obviously, the format has changed this time around. So, I think, for us it’s just getting everyone up to speed on what these games kind of look like and what the job is that we’ve got to do. I think we’re confident the team’s looking great and I think we will have a great campaign.”
Lydia Brooks has joined the squad and will accompany Spencer and Sydney Schneider in goal, and Spencer is excited about the addition.
“We have a good connection with the goalkeeping union and it’s been something that we’ve grown over a number of years now. And obviously with Liya coming in, we know what she can do; she has been on camps where she had to play in some of the games and she has stood up to the test.
“So, any one of us can play in these games and do a great job, so that’s great for competition, and we’re all fighting for the spot at the end of the day. But, we have a great vibe within us and what we do [is], we support each other and we’re here to compete at the end of the day — and results matter,” Spencer explained.
