Quarter-final places up for grabs in ISSA daCosta Cup
The first quarter-finalists in the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition will be decided this afternoon after the playing of six games in second set of matches in the Round of 16.
The competition resumed on Friday after a 37-day break due to the passage of Hurricane Melissa last month.
Garvey Maceo High stayed in contention to defend their titles after holding off Maggotty High 3-2 in the Zone 3 game at Wembley Centre of Excellence in Clarendon on Friday.
Garvey Maceo lead 2-0 at half time and were up 3-0 before Maggotty High stormed back with two goals. However, Maggotty fell short and were eliminated from the daCosta Cup after two losses in the round.
The long-delayed, much anticipated clash between former champions Clarendon College and Glenmuir High in Chapelton is the standout game on Saturday.
Back-to-back wins for the teams that won their games in the first set of Round of 16 games will secure them places in the quarter-finals which are set to start on December 5.
Cornwall College, Christiana High, Ocho Rios High, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS), Glenmuir High, McGrath High and Dinthill Technical could all secure places in the next round.
Glenmuir High could book an early spot in the next round with a victory over Clarendon College.
Glenmuir are on three points from their win over Maggotty last month and would take charge of the group if they prevail over their parish rivals.
Clarendon College are unbeaten throughout the season so far and they could at least go joint top with Garvey Maceo if they defeat Glenmuir High.
Maldon High’s recent withdrawal from the competition leaves three teams in Zone 1, which means a win for Cornwall College over William Knibb Memorial at Drax Hall would see them and Christiana High progress to the next stage.
Christiana High defeated William Knibb Memorial 3-0 when they met. Another a loss for the Trelawny-based team would see them eliminated from quarter-final contention.
Cornwall College beat Maldon High 6-1 in what was their third meeting of the season. But that result was made void after Maldon High’s withdrawal.
STETHS and Ocho Rios High are tied on three points in Zone 2 after wins over Kemps Hill and Old Harbour High, respectively,. A win for both teams would see them take their places in the top eight.
McGrath High, a finalist last season, leads Zone 4 on goal-difference over Dinthill Technical. McGrath face a Manning’s School team coming off its first loss of the season. Manning’s are winless in their previous two games after winning their first 10 by an aggregate of 50-0.
Dinthill Technical were the first team to beat Manning’s School, edging them 2-1. Dinthill will go in hunt of back-to-back wins when they play away to a Manchester High team, also smarting from their first loss of the season last time out when they slipped 0-2 to McGrath High.
Like Manning’s, Manchester High were perfect until their last two games.
