St James Municipal Corporation issues final notice for bus stop sheds
ST JAMES, Jamaica — The St James Municipal Corporation is calling on entities that have adopted bus stop sheds to remove compromised signs.
With the passage of Hurricane Melissa a month ago, several signs atop these structures have been damaged and left in a precarious state. In light of this, the Corporation has been urging the relevant entities to remove them with this now being the final appeal.
“We ask that all compromised infrastructure be removed or restored no later than December 3, 2025. Signs or bus stops left unattended after this date will be fully removed by the Corporation,” mayor Richard Vernon told the Observer Online.
He was quick to highlight that this was not being done as anything punitive but rather to ensure, among other things, the safety of individuals in space.
“This directive is not intended as punishment, but as a necessary measure to ensure that Montego Bay reflects the dignity, safety, and vibrancy its residents and visitors deserve,” he said.
“We therefore urge all partners to act forthwith, so that together we can safeguard the integrity of our public spaces and advance the restoration of our city,” he added. The mayor said this should be seen as part of the continued engagement between the city and these entities as the Corporation tries to make the city as it once was.
