DaCosta round of 16 ends with aplomb
Former champions Glenmuir High, St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Cornwall College led the qualifiers for the quarter-finals of the ISSA daCosta Cup football competition as the Round of 16 ended with the predicted fireworks on Tuesday.
Defending champions Garvey Maceo were eliminated as they were edged on goal difference by former champions Clarendon College with both finishing on four points in Zone 3.
The eight teams that will advance to the quarter-finals on Friday are Cornwall College and Christiana High from Zone 1, STETHS and Kemps Hill from Zone 2, Glenmuir High and Clarendon College from Zone 3, and Dinthill Technical, and McGrath High from Zone 4.
At Glenmuir, the home team ran riot over last year’s champions winning 5-2 with goals from Dunstin Cohen, Orel Miller, Oneil Headley, Christopher Rodney, and an own goal to finish with nine points.
Omarion Brown scored both goals for Garvey Maceo.
Clarendon College beat Maggotty High to end with a goal difference of plus four to Garvey Maceo’s negative two.
At Drax Hall, STETHS handed Ocho Rios High back to back losses, winning 3-0 led by a double from Kaieem Lewis and the other from Deandre Wright-Barnett as they also had a perfect win record in Zone 2.
Kemps Hill stayed alive with their 5-0 win over Old Harbour High to get second place in the group with six points.
Ameche Robinson scored a double for Cornwall College as they beat Christiana High 3-1 in a game where both teams had already qualified and were playing for Zone 1 honours.
Cornwall College led 3-0 at half-time as Mekhi Foster scored the other for Cornwall College while Horatio Brown scored a consolation goal in time added on for Christiana.
The Manchester-based school missed a chance of pulling a goal back earlier but Brandon Satchell’s penalty kick was well-saved by Cornwall College’s goalkeeper Carlyle Tingling.
Dinthill Technical topped Zone 4 after edging McGrath High 1-0 as both teams made safe progress to the final eight.
