Pratville Primary shares fun day joy with hurricane-ravaged Thornton Primary
MANCHESTER, Jamaica — Sixty students of the St Elizabeth-based Thornton Primary School were on Thursday feted during a fun day hosted by the Manchester-based Pratville Primary School.
Principal at Pratville Primary and Infant School, Tameika Swaby-Johnson, said her institution launched its School Partnership Initiative aimed at supporting a school in St Elizabeth affected by the recent hurricane.
“Thornton Primary School, led by Principal Mrs Maria Blair, has been selected as the partner institution for the 2025–2026 academic year. The Ministry of Education and Youth, Region 5, through its Community Relations Education Officer, Ms Anieta Bailey, played an instrumental role in the selection of Thornton Primary School for this meaningful partnership,” Swaby-Johnson said.
“[We] welcomed approximately 60 students and 13 staff members from Thornton Primary to the annual fun day, marking an inspiring start to the partnership,” she added.

She said the students “enjoyed an engaging mix of rides, games, and fun-filled activities, creating lasting memories and strengthening bonds”.
The children were also feted with food and gifts.
Blair expressed deep appreciation and great enthusiasm for the partnership with Pratville Primary.
She described the initiative as a powerful source of hope and encouragement for her students as they continue to recover from hurricane impacts. Blair stated that her Grade six cohort is eager to participate in academic exchanges and collaborative projects planned for the year between both schools.
Swaby-Johnson reaffirmed the importance of fostering empathy, resilience, and community-minded leadership among Jamaica’s youth. She noted that this partnership is a meaningful way to support national recovery while promoting academic excellence.

She said under a partnership initiative between both schools beginning January 2026, students from both Grade six classes will participate in academic writing exchanges aligned with the National Standards Curriculum, virtual or in-person engagement sessions and joint devotion or motivational activities.
“This partnership is expected to grow annually, serving as a model of inter-parish collaboration, compassion, and educational unity. Both principals are committed to maintaining a strong and purposeful alliance that benefits students, families, and communities across Jamaica,” said Swaby-Johnson.
“Pratville Primary and Infant School looks forward to a year of meaningful growth, shared learning, and national solidarity with Thornton Primary School,” she added.
