Digicel says latest act of vandalism causing service disruption for customers in Kingston
Digicel has condemned what it says is, “a more recent, deliberate and criminal act of vandalism that has damaged a critical section of its underground fibre network in New Kingston, resulting in service disruptions for customers in the Kingston Metropolitan area”.
In a media release Friday morning, Digicel said the incident, which is believed to have occurred overnight, targeted one of its protected cable routes.
Digicel described this incident as “dangerous, reckless, and wholly unacceptable.”
According to the company, technical teams have been deployed and are currently carrying out urgent restoration works to safely repair the infrastructure and restore services as quickly as possible.
Digicel Jamaica CEO, Stephen Murad, said the company will not tolerate attacks on the nation’s communications backbone:
“This is an attack on Jamaica’s essential infrastructure. Every time someone deliberately destroys our network, they disrupt essential services, businesses, threaten public safety, and interrupt the daily lives of hardworking Jamaicans. We strongly condemn this reckless behaviour and will continue to work closely with the authorities to ensure those responsible are held accountable. Digicel will not be deterred, and we remain committed to reconnecting Jamaica and rebuilding a resilient, reliable network for our customers,” said Murad.
Digicel technical teams have been deployed to the affected areas, and the company has activated its technical response protocols.
Murad said the company is working with law enforcement as investigations continue. Digicel is also urging members of the public to report any suspicious activities near telecommunications sites, equipment, or underground access points.
