Freemantle scores 300th win as retirement looms
As veteran trainer Lawrence Freemantle approaches the twilight of his illustrious career, he’s savouring a career milestone – his 300th win — with Phoenix Risen on Saturday, November 29, 2025.
Ridden by Demar Williams, Phoenix Risen won the three-year-old and upward Optional Claiming ($350,000-$250,000) event that included six-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) over four furlongs (800m) by a length and a half.
“I have a few shots left to fire,” Freemantle said with a smile, hinting at more to come before retirement.
His win was more than just a number – it was a testament to his perseverance.
“I am feeling really good. I am used to winning races but over the last few months I kind of took a little break because I didn’t have enough material. So I just sat back, programmed, and come directly for this 300 winners and it was very an overwhelming feeling,” Freemantle told the Jamaica Observer’s
Supreme Racing Guide.
His first winner, King of the Band, with Leo Miller, still holds a special place in his heart.
“My first winner was more important because I had more joy and feelings, but my first winner and my 300th winner are both important,” Freemantle said.
When asked about his standout horse, Freemantle didn’t hesitate: Mr Skill.
“I won 12 races out of 22 starts with him — that’s a training feat. I won from $350,000 claiming level up to Overnight Allowance, which made me feel like I am doing something. I have trained other notable horses include Military Move and Natural Desire, but Mr Skill left something in my heart.
Freemantle, who began training horses in 2001, reflected on his career.
“My career has been very good. I have had my share of winnings, training, and performance, and so I feel very good about it,” he said.
