Mount Pleasant shift focus as JPL resumes
FRESH from winning the Concacaf Caribbean Cup competition in a dramatic, second-leg game at the National Stadium on Tuesday, Mount Pleasant FA will turn their attention to climbing back up the ladder in the Jamaica Premier League (JPL) when they play away to Dunbeholden in one of four games scheduled for today.
Forty-eight days have passed since the last time there were games in the JPL, and since then the island suffered its worst cataclysmic natural disaster when Category 5 Hurricane Melissa left billions of dollars in destruction, especially in western Jamaica.
As a result, Treasure Beach FC based in St Elizabeth — one of the worst-hit areas — have been granted a further two weeks to prepare for their resumption.
Also today, second-placed Portmore United will host Arnett Gardens at the Ferdie Neita Sports Complex, Harbour View and Spanish Town Police will meet at Harbour View, and Racing United take on Molynes United at Stadium East.
Two more games will be played on Monday, with leaders Montego Bay United going up against defending champions Cavalier SC while Tivoli Gardens will face Waterhouse, both at the National Stadium.
Mount Pleasant has played three times since the enforced break, the second leg of the Concacaf Caribbean Cup semi-finals against Defence Force of Trinidad and Tobago, and both legs against Universidad O&M of the Dominican Republic, so they should be more match-ready for today’s game.
The St Ann-based club that has played only five JPL games because of their Concacaf obligations are in an unfamiliar eighth place on nine points with just two wins, and will need to turn around their JPL form as soon as possible.
Mount Pleasant struggled in the JPL even while completing the Concacaf first round with an impressive record, and will need that form if they are to start climbing up the table.
Dunbeholden, who have played seven games, are further down the table in 11th place on eight points, and they too will need to start winning as they lost their last two games against Mount Pleasant 3-0 and 4-0.
Portmore United, who won their last two games before the break, will be going after a third-straight win over Arnett Gardens who are struggling in ninth position, tied on nine points with Mount Pleasant and Treasure Beach, having lost their last two games before the forced stoppage.
The break might have helped Arnett to fix whatever was wrong with the team as they won three straight before suffering back-to-back losses to Treasure Beach and Tivoli Gardens.
Third-placed Racing will hope to get the better of Molynes who are 10 places and 10 points behind them in the table, and have only scored six goals in their eight games.
Racing are off to yet another good start in the JPL, and their 15 goals scored have them tied for second best with Portmore, even while playing a game less.
In the other game, Harbour View have boosted their ranks during the break and will have Vassell Reynolds calling the shots. They should be able to get the better of rock-bottom Spanish Town Police who have scored just three goals in their nine games played and conceded a league-worst 18 times.
Harbour View lost their last two games before the break, conceding six goals in both, and will hope to improve on their two games won.
