Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival donates hurricane relief items to Jireh Benevolent Society
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Hurricane relief items that were dropped off in boxes by patrons attending last month’s staging of the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival, were recently donated to the Jireh Benevolent Society in Mandeville.
In an interview with Observer Online last week, Joan Hudson, Founder of Jireh Benevolent Society thanked patrons for their kind gesture.
“Hundreds of people will have a better Christmas this year because of your kind donations and gifts to us. Thanks to all the patrons who contributed and God bless you all,” said Hudson.
She shared that the charity has been in operation for over 20 years and will be doing their part in bringing some Christmas cheer to many including the elderly and children.
“Our charity, Jireh Benevolent Society has been operating for over 20 years, for the past 10 years we started a Christmas treat for the elderly, children, homeless, unemployed, disabled persons of Manchester and its environs. On December 15, we culminate our days event at the Manchester High School auditorium. We have devotions then greetings and testimonials from different people attending. We have a four-course meal and entertainment is provided. Towards the end we distribute gifts to all in attendance, singing Christmas carols and wishing them a wonderful Christmas season. It is an event that is marked on the hearts of all. This year, because of the devastating effects from hurricane Melissa, we are expecting an overflow of people from everywhere. We are now in preparation mode and given the gravity of hunger, homelessness and families being without the basic necessities of life, we are grateful beyond words for the generous contribution,” said Hudson.
The relief items were collected from the Jerk Festival and sorted by SSMC Xpress International and shipped to Jamaica through the efforts of Connex Air Cargo.
“In moments like these, Jamaica needs all hands and all hearts. Connex Air Cargo is honoured to partner with SSMC Xpress International Couriers and the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival team to move these relief supplies home. Every box packed represents hope, dignity, and support for families who are rebuilding post-Hurricane Melissa. This is more than logistics, this is national responsibility, and Connex Air Cargo will continue to stand in the gap for Jamaica,” said Luke Hamilton, Chairman & Co-Owner, Connex Air Cargo.
